Utopian Trap is a progressive metal band from San Francisco Bay Area. The band morphed from a project called Fiction, founded in 2005 by their guitarists Chandra and Vinod. In the early days they started writing songs and actively looking for band members. Hard hitting versatile drummer Jai came on board in 2007. Through various connections, Anand(vocals) and Sid(bass, backup vocals) were invited to join the band in late 2008 to start working on the debut album. The metal project Fiction had now become Utopian Trap. The band spent most of 2009 recording and producing the album Fiction Fades Into Reality. While rooted in traditional heavy metal, this album delves into technical, thrash and progressive territories. This complex debut CD is packed with heavy, technical and addictive guitar riffs, explosive and intelligent drumming, powerful vocals, thumping tight basslines and deep and thoughtful lyrics. The album has received rave reviews online and has been featured on metal podcasts and radio stations across the globe. In July, 2010, Sid decided to step down from from his role of bass playing due to family commitments. Utopian Trap invited the accomplished bassist/keyboardist Farhan to replace Sid. Veteran metal vocalist, Norman Skinner, replaced Anand as the Utopian Trap frontman in November 2010. Norman quickly rewrote most of the vocals off the first album and did some recordings and a gig with Utopian Trap. But by the spring of 2011, Norman's gigging/recording schedule with his other music projects forced him to step down as the Utopian Trap frontman. In December 2011, Utopian Trap invited a phenomenally talented metal vocalist, James Toy (ex Crushdown) to front the band. James had his debut performance with the band at Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland on Jan 12th, 2012. He brought incredible energy to Utopian Trap shows. This line up performed their last live show in August 2012 at 9Lives in Gilroy, CA, after which drummer Jai stepped down due to other music projects and vocalist Jimmy had to step down due to commitments on personal front. In early 2013, versatile progressive metal vocalist Eric Boles (ex-Timeline vocalist) joined the band and soon after Utopian trap line up was complete again when a gifted 19 year old prog metal drummer Rohil Taggarsi joined the band. Rohil and Eric played their first gig with the band at The Quarter Note in Sunnyvale on August 12th, 2014. Utopian Trap released their long awaited second studio album, The Human Price, in July 2016.
